Although there is no relation between art (calligraphy) and medicine, art is the basis of imagination and medical therapy that of service. But when a master doctor is also proficient in art, then it can only be imagined what a wonderful resultant creation it will be. Zoya is one such example. As her name suggests (Zoya – love/life), her artistry, a combination of Urdu calligraphy with the use of ghazal words to shape a painting, are a delightful use of imagination. This is by way of introducing us to the artist, Dr Zoya Zaidi. Her solo exhibition of paintings was recently on display at Delhi's RKG Art Gallery.
Painting and ghazal are two different genres, but the recognition that Dr Zoya Zaidi has received as a doctor is also visible in her works as an artist. Zoya, who has been working continuously in calligraphy, has enriched the ghazal form with her new experiments and creative contribution. With her artistic ability using Urdu calligraphy and ghazal couplets, she has created a relationship that spreads wings with imagination through her expression. Zoya is serious about wanting to be able to share the emotion of the ghazal through the art of calligraphy with her artistic vision. Through a compelling use of Urdu calligraphy, she has successful created the imagery that we speak of in art.

Experimentation of ghazal with calligraphy introduces Zoya, the artist, and presents different aspects of ghazal through her work that includes calligraphy art. This is the journey of her artistic life that has been written by calligraphy art; those who either know her closely or study her art understand her talent. Zoya is a sensitive artist. She has made the representation of ghazal as her maxim in which there is an in-depth study of the flow of colours and calligraphy forms.
Organized by renowned artist Qazi M Ragib at Delhi's RKG Art Gallery, this exhibition was inaugurated by the well-known TV anchor Salma Sultan who showered warm praise on the artist in the presence of many artists and visitors.. Eminent filmmaker of the country Muzaffar Ali and Syed Hamid Sahiba also visited the exhibition at the closing ceremony.

To understand the meaning of ghazals in Zoya's paintings, the calligraphy has been beautifully inscribed in lines and colours. Even if viewers do not know Urdu or ghazal, they can still understand properly the use of colour and lyrical lines. Zoya’s art that is knocking on the door of the world of contemporary art shows the sensibility of art within her, and how close she is to its spirit.
A picture is known not only by imagination but by novel experimentation which has been well understood and painted by the artist and physician Zoya. There are many calligraphers, but along with the calligraphy that Zoya has created, only those creative artists who are conceptually and intellectually inclined actually do it. Only those who are conscious of truth within themselves try to recognize and express the artist in themselves.
Born in a well-to-do family, Zoya is a well-known lady doctor with a progressive outlook and human qualities, which is why she has an expanded vision and a source for creativity. Looking at her works, it seems as if she is not only creating a picture but an entire world. Zoya in her own way has engraved each work with a particular colour combination in a way that exactly depicts the lines and meaning of the ghazal in the experiment and she has been quite successful in this. This is no small matter for one to achieve in Urdu calligraphy.
Now, this aside, I’d like to draw attention to the fact that it often happens that we understand the talent of a painter only till he/she is limited to their artworks, but in today's era, contemporary artists of the world present art through many images and forms. Zoya is one such artist who has tried to express her feelings through the medium of artistic calligraphy and colours, thus giving a beautiful shape to her creations by merging the two modes of expression effortlessly.

Zoya Zaidi's personal statement: I was interested in arts, literature and music from childhood. There was an atmosphere of arts and music in the family. We learned to recite Ghalib, Mir, Iqbal and Faiz, Shakespeare, Keats and Shelly, even Thomas Hardy but I wanted to become a doctor. So I studied medicine while also learning all the techniques and forms of art. After becoming a doctor, when my medical practice was established, I chanced upon the art of calligraphy and learnt the fonts by reading books. Knowing six languages I started writing in Urdu, English, Persian and Arabic. I have yet to start Russian calligraphy. I practice theses forms of art to find that satisfaction, which creativity gives you - at once calming and stimulating. I explore my love for poetry, by interpreting the meaning of a particular poem with the help of colours and designs typical of that culture, poetry and literature.
वैसे तो कला (कैलिग्राफी) और चिकित्सा में कोई रिश्ता नहीं बनता, कला कल्पना का और चिकित्सा सेवा का आधार है। पर जब कोई सिद्धहस्त डाक्टर कला में भी निपुण हो तो कल्पना की तक जा सकती है उसका रचनात्मक सृजन कितना अद्भुत प्रयास होगा । इस अद्भुतता की मिसाल हैं जोया। जैसा इनका नाम है वहीं कलात्मकता है उनके उर्दू कैलिग्राफी और गजल के शब्दो का प्रयोग कर पेंटिंग का आकार देना, दोनों का समावेश कल्पनाशीलता का शानदार प्रयोग है। यह विशाल व्यक्तित्व की धनी इस कलाकार का परिचय कराती है जिनका पूरा नाम है जोया जैदी। दिल्ली की आर के जी कलादीर्घा में उनके एकल चित्रों की प्रदर्शनी इन दिनों चल रही है।
चित्रकारी और गजल दोनों अलग-अलग विधाएं हैं पर सिद्धहस्त और प्रसिद्ध डाक्टर जोया जैदी को डाक्टर के तौर पर जितनी प्रतिष्ठा मिली, एक कलाकार के तौर पर भी यह इनकी कृतियों में देखकर मिलती है। कैलिग्राफी में लगातार काम कर रहीं जोया ने अपने नऐ प्रयोग व रचनात्मक योगदान से उसे समृद्ध किया है। उर्दू कैलिग्राफी और गजल के शब्दो के बहाने अपनी कलात्मक क्षमता से उनमें यह रिश्ता बनाया है की अपनी अभिव्यक्ति के ज़रिए कल्पना के साथ पंख फैलाती हैं। गजल में हम जिसकी बात करते हैं, दरअसल जोया उसकी कलात्मक दूरदर्शिता के साथ कैलिग्राफी कला से पहुंचना चाहती हैं। कला में जिस कल्पना की बात करते हैं, वह उर्दू कैलिग्राफी के प्रभावशाली प्रयोग तक पहुंचने की कोशिश में सफल रही हैं।
कैलिग्राफी के साथ गजल प्रयोग कलाकार का परिचय देती है और उसके काम को आकार देने वाली कैलिग्राफी कला के माध्यम से गजल के विभिन्न पहलुओं को दर्शाती है। यह उनके जीवन की कला यात्रा है जो कैलिग्राफी कला द्वारा लिखी गयी है जो या तो उन्हें करीब से जानते हैं या उनकी कला का अध्ययन करते हैं उनकी इस प्रतिभा को समझते हैं।
कलाकार जोया बहुत संवेदनशील हैं । गजल के भावों को अपना मूलमंत्र बनाया। जिसमें रंगों का प्रवाह और कैलिग्राफी आकृतियों का गहन अध्ययन है। दिल्ली की आर के जी कलादीर्घा में मशहूर आर्टिस्ट काजी एम रागिब के प्रयासों से चल रही इस प्रदर्शनी का उद्घाटन मशहूर टीवी ऐंकर रहीं सलमा सुल्तान ने किया और भूरिभूरी प्रशंसा की जिसमें देश के कई कलाकार और दर्शकों की उपस्थिति रही। देश के जानेमाने फिल्मकार मुजफर अली और सैय्यद हामिद साहिबा ने भी इस चित्र प्रदर्शनी का समापन समारोह में अवलोकन किया।
जोया के चित्रों में गजल के अर्थ को समझने के लिए कैलिग्राफी को रेखाओं और रंगों में बेहद सुंदरता के साथ अंकित किया गया है। अगर देखने वालों को उर्दू या गजल की जानकारी न हो तो भी वह रंगों और लयात्मक रेखाओं को ठीक से समझ सकता है । समकालीन कलाकारों में दस्तक देता जोया का चित्र संसार और उनके भीतर की कला संवेदनशीलता से प्रतीत होता है कि वह रूह के कितना क़रीब होता।
किसी चित्र को सिर्फ कल्पनाओं से ही नहीं बल्कि नऐ प्रयोग से जाना जाता है जिसे कलाकार और चिकित्सक जोया ने बखूबी समझा और चित्रित किया है। बहुत सारे कैलिग्राफी करने वाले होते हैं पर जोया ने कैलिग्राफी के साथ साथ जैसे चित्रों को गढ़ है वह वैचारिक बौद्धिक रचनात्मक कलाकार ही करते हैं। जिनके भीतर सत्य की चेतना होती है वे ही अपने अंदर कलाकार को पहचानने का यत्न करते हैं और व्यक्त करते हैं।
एक संभ्रांत परिवार में पैदा हुयी जोया प्रगतिशील विचारवान और मानवीय गुणों वाली एक सुप्रसिद्घ महिला डाक्टर हैं। जिससे उनकी दृष्टि को विस्तार भी मिलता है और रचनात्मकता भी मिलती है। इनके चित्रों को देखने में ऐसा लगता जैसे वह एक चित्र ही नहीं, उसका संसार रच रही हों। जोया ने अपने-अपने ढंग से हर चित्र को कुछ इस तरह रंग संयोजन से उकेरा है कि बिल्कुल गजल की पंक्तियां और उसके अर्थ को दर्शाया जा सके जिस प्रयोग में वह सफल रही हैं। जिसे रच पाना उर्दू कैलिग्राफी में सबके बस की बात नही।
अब इससे हट कर मैं जिसओरआपका ध्यान आकृष्ट कराना चाहता हूँ उसमें प्राय: होता यह है कि हम कलाकार के चित्रों तक सीमित रहने तक ही किसी चित्रकार की प्रतिभा को समझते हैं पर आज के इस युग में दुनिया के समकालीन आधुनिक कलाकार कई विम्बों व रूपों मे अपनी कला प्रतिभा को प्रदर्शित करते हैं जिनमें से एक कलाकार जोया हैं।जिन्होंने कलात्मक कैलिग्राफी और रंगों के माध्यमों द्वारा अपनी भावनाओं को अभिव्यक्ति करने का प्रयास कर अभिव्यक्ति की दोविधाओं को बहुत सहजता से एकाकार करते हुए अपनी कृतियों को खूबसूरत आकार दिया है।
